The One Hour Rule

The One Hour Rule

There is a saying that the first hour of the day determines how the rest of the day follows and the last hour of the day decides how you start the next day. Many of us must have read or watched interviews on successful people like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Jeff Bezos etc and their daily routines. How they go about planning the day for themselves, yet though we follow the same we are not as successful as they are. It is not possible to include everyone's routine in our daily routine. Let's be honest. We have our own life challenges and routines; hence we must concentrate on the routines that matter the most to us as an individual. In this blog, we will understand a bird’s eye view of the ONE HOUR RULE that each one of us must have in the morning (to start your day with) and at night (to end your day strong)

One Hour Rule (Morning)

Waking up in the morning can be the most difficult and daunting task for a few of us who are night owls. However, for the early birds this is the best time of the day. However, at times in today's world where work hours are not fixed, commute is hectic, Netflix is the need of the hour during bedtime and life is so crazy, it's just not possible for all of us to follow the "early to bed, early to rise" concept and that is perfectly alright. As long as you have the one-hour rule in place, it doesn't matter when you wake up, it’s about what you do after you wake up. Let me making this simpler for you by explaining to you the following pointers:

Hydration: Hydration is important in the early hours of the morning since our body is exempted from getting hydrated during sleep. As you are aware that most of our body composition is made of water and not mass. Hence, it’s not only important but also the need of the body to get hydrated the moment we wake up from the bed. This gives us a boost of oxygen to our brains unlike the caffeine from coffee and we feel fresh instantly which lasts for a longer period of time.

Motivation: Apart from the other tasks that you do during your mornings, exercise can be one important aspect of motivation. I am aware that exercise is the least considered activity in our daily life, however even if you can take a 15-minute walk in the garden close by or spend some time in sunlight on your rooftop, it will surely give you the motivation you will need to start your day positively.

Nutrition: We Indians are known to have the best cuisine when it comes to food and breakfast is not that far behind. Even if you stay alone there are a variety of things that you can prepare and boost your day with the necessary nutrition. A quick tip for you guys here: If you do not wish to waste a lot of time preparing your breakfast, you can definitely have the same breakfast every day for a week, however ensure that it has enough nutrients to keep you going for the next few hours in the mornings.

Concentration : You can do this task as a combination of your task while exercising (in the form of yoga) or during breakfast (read an article or a book of your choice or just gaze outside the window and pay attention to the nature outdoors) It will not only help you clear your mind but also help you make complex decisions simpler during the day with 100% focus.

One Hour Rule (Night)

Night time habits are exactly the reverse of the morning ones. It’s the time to relax and wind down at the end of the day after a hard day of work. The night time rule surely helps the morning one in a vital manner. If you are able to do the night routine consciously, the morning routine will be a cake walk. Sleep is the most important factor here. As per the National Sleep Foundation, each one of us have their own unique sleep cycles and sleep time. It is divided into age groups respectively. The better you sleep, the better you wake up and the better the day goes by. Let me explain this better in the following pointers:

Clear Down: Once back home from work or post dinner, clear down your kitchen or room. Keep your office clothes and others daily requirements ready for the next day. It helps you in ensuring the place where you live is tidy and ready for a new day. No one likes to see a dirty kitchen or a messed-up room early in the morning. It will also adversely affect your morning routine and your plan for the rest of the day too.

Settle Down: After a hard day of work, you deserve a much-needed break. Dim the lights and switch on your mood for a relaxing night. You can also visit your rooftop with your favorite drink under the stars. It's a beautiful feeling trust me. Settling down reduces your body temperature and moves your body into the relaxation mode. It’s the best feeling in the world.

Relax a Bit: Relaxation helps your body rejuvenate and also helps you to sleep better. It gives your body that short vacationing feeling that is the need of the hour after a hectic day at work or play. It helps your body move from the excited state to the neutral state just like your car or motorbike. This is the time when you need not make complex decisions as it will affect the quality of your decisions. It may also result in wasting more time the next day correcting the decisions you made the night earlier. So, take a chill pill and sink into your bed during this time.

Wind Down: Each one of us has a different way to wind down at the end of the day. Some read a book, some listen to music or podcasts etc Do whatever you feel is best for you. Just ensure you keep your gadgets away as it will defeat the whole purpose of this exercise. Also, if you are in the habit of making a TO-DO list for the next day, this is the best time to do so that you don’t waste time in killing it the next day too.

At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong routine, what matters at the end of the day is that you are able to make the most of your own personal routine. It’s always better to have ONE rather than NONE. Even if any of you guys have not had a routine all this while, this is the best time to start one and see if it makes a positive difference to your personal or professional life. If any of you have some more suggestions on this subject do share it across in the comments below. Have a good time.
